Il garbuglio di Garlasco

Un perfetto colpevole
e l’ostinata ricerca della verità.

A book on the Garlasco murder 15 years after the events: what can be said that is new and unsaid?

‘Nothing new but a lot unsaid. So much that, despite being in the testimonies, in the procedural papers, in the expert reports, and even in the logic, had remained buried in the heavy files of the courts. The book brought to light everything that lurked in, on and beside the facts we know. Everything that was not visible in the bare chronicle, but was there.”
(from an interview with Simone Toscano)

This is where the real mystery lies, in that tangle of human relationships that shapes and distorts the two powers to which we are all subject: the judiciary and the fourth estate, the media.
(from an interview with the legal journal Filodiritto, 2022)

Two days before mid-August 2007, in an apparently sleepy village in the Lomellina region, at the hour when the sun is at its zenith, a boy runs to the carabinieri and tells them he has seen his girlfriend lying twisted in blood at the bottom of a cellar staircase. The girl has been murdered and the boy is strongly suspected. Dull-faced, shifty-eyed, contemptuous with journalists, always perfect in his dress, locked in his own permanent bubble of coldness, the boy is immediately ‘the cold-eyed Bocconi man’ to everyone.

There are cases and characters in the news that trigger strong feelings more than others. For years, the Garlasco crime has kept the supporters of the guilty and the innocent alive. In 2022, this book brought to light protagonists of the story previously unknown to the public, such as a young and determined lawyer and a very unique legal advisor, who, not resigned to Alberto Stasi’s conviction, worked together over time to uncover the truth. The new developments and contexts revealed by this book reignited media interest and, above all, contributed to the reopening of the investigation. Characters, feelings and moments of life narrated “live”. A reconstruction based on thousands of pages of trial proceedings, interrogations, wiretaps and direct knowledge of the protagonists. Irrefutable documentation that found its basis in 2025 in the new investigation by the Pavia Public Prosecutor’s Office.

“Warmly recommended to anyone aspiring to be a judge or a lawyer. Also very useful for an indistinct category, called ‘public opinion,’ meaning each and every one of us. Because this book, which retraces the steps and patches of a judicial proceeding, reminds us not only that trials conducted through ignorance and celebrated in bars or on television are a recurring barbarity, but also that even when a case is judicially closed, it is not necessarily closed in reality. Because the judicial truth must be accepted, but not confused with the truth. […] Ambrosio’s work transcends the specific case and engages with the very way in which one must reason about justice.”

‘An exercise in intelligence and civility that was sorely needed.’
Antonio Fusco

“Il libro ha un ritmo serrato, un linguaggio non convenzionale che sembra voler suggerire la sceneggiatura di una serie televisiva alla ‘Law & Order’. Colpisce la modalità di scrittura, dove lo stile dell’inchiesta giornalistica si intreccia con il genere della fiction. Un romanzo in cui la storia però non è verosimile: è proprio vera.”
Marco Brando

“Il Garbuglio di Garlasco è una lettura molto interessante, e anche avvincente”
